Your overall IELTS band score is the average of four individual skill scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — each marked on a scale of 0 to 9 in half-band increments. Most universities and employers evaluate your overall band, but immigration programmes and many institutions also enforce a per-skill minimum: you can fail to qualify even if your overall band is high enough, simply because one section falls short.
For example, a score of 8.0 / 5.5 / 7.0 / 7.5 gives an overall band of 7.0 — but if the destination requires 6.0 in every skill, that Reading score of 5.5 disqualifies you regardless of the overall average. Always check skill-level requirements, not just the headline band.

Canada accepts IELTS through two main pathways: immigration (Express Entry) and study permits. The test type required is different for each, which is one of the most common mistakes applicants make.
Express Entry requires IELTS General Training — not Academic. IRCC does not accept Academic scores for immigration purposes. Your results are converted to Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels independently for each of the four skills. The CLB level you achieve determines both your eligibility to enter the pool and how many Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points you earn from language.
The minimum requirement for the Federal Skilled Worker Program is CLB 7 — equivalent to band 6.0 in all four skills. However, CLB 7 alone is rarely competitive: most successful all-program draws in 2025–2026 have fallen roughly in the 470–540+ range (category-based and CEC draws often clear at lower cutoffs), and language is worth up to 136 CRS points for a candidate applying without a spouse. Most competitive candidates target CLB 9, which requires approximately band 7.0 in Reading, Writing, and Speaking, and band 8.0 in Listening.
Canadian universities and colleges require IELTS Academic for study permit applications. The typical minimum is 6.5 overall with no skill below 6.0, though this varies significantly by institution and program. Top-ranked universities such as UofT, UBC, and McGill often require 6.5–7.0 overall with specific per-skill thresholds for competitive programs. Some diploma and certificate programs accept 6.0 overall.
UK visa applications require a UKVI-approved version of IELTS — not the standard academic test. IELTS for UKVI (Academic) and IELTS for UKVI (General Training) are taken at approved test centres and produce the same scores, but the results are sent directly to UKVI.
The Home Office requires CEFR level B2 for a degree-level Student Visa, which for IELTS for UKVI means a minimum of 5.5 in each of the four components — there is no separate "overall" number; every skill must individually clear the line. In practice, the university or college sets its own English language requirement (often higher) in the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Russell Group universities commonly require 6.5–7.0 overall with 6.0 or 6.5 in Writing and Speaking specifically. Always check both the visa requirement and your institution's own threshold.
Since 8 January 2026, new Skilled Worker visa applicants must demonstrate CEFR level B2 English — up from the previous B1 standard. For IELTS for UKVI, B2 means a minimum of 5.5 in each of the four skills. (If you already hold a Skilled Worker visa granted before 8 January 2026, the older B1 / IELTS 4.0 threshold still applies when you extend.) Some occupations — particularly healthcare roles registered with the NMC or GMC — have significantly higher English proficiency requirements set by their regulatory body, independent of the visa threshold.
Australia uses a points-based skilled migration system. Your IELTS result maps directly to an English language level (Competent, Proficient, or Superior) that determines both your visa eligibility and how many migration points you earn.
Competent English (required to qualify) = band 6.0 in all four skills. Proficient English (earns 10 additional points) = band 7.0 in all four skills. Superior English (earns 20 additional points) = band 8.0 in all four skills. For IELTS General Training, the same band thresholds apply. Unlike Canada, Australia uses your band score directly — there is no separate conversion framework. Each skill must individually meet the threshold; an average is not used.
The Department of Home Affairs raised the Student Visa minimum in 2026: it is now IELTS 6.0 overall with no component below 5.5 for direct university entry (up from 5.5 overall previously). Packaged ELICOS (English preparation) courses can enter at 5.0 overall, and foundation/pathway programmes at 5.5 overall. Almost all Australian universities set a further requirement in their offer letters — typically Academic 6.0–6.5 overall, with 6.0 in Writing for undergraduate entry. The visa minimum and the university admission requirement are separate; both must be met.

Yes. IELTS results are valid for two years from your test date for most immigration and university purposes — but this varies by destination, so always check. For Canada Express Entry, your result must remain valid for the full duration of IRCC processing — if it expires while your application is in progress, you may need to retake. Australian skilled migration is a notable exception: the Department of Home Affairs generally accepts English test results for up to three years from the test date (longer than most other destinations, to account for EOI and invitation wait times). Always factor processing time into your test booking date.
Your overall band is the mean of your four skill scores, rounded to the nearest whole or half band. For example: Listening 6.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.0, Speaking 7.5 = total 27 ÷ 4 = 6.75, which rounds up to 7.0. Note that Canada's CLB system does not use the overall band at all — each skill converts to CLB independently, so a high overall score does not compensate for a weak individual skill in the immigration context.
